Twitter. All the cool kids are doing it. But that is not why we are going to try it. I created the account because I want to see if we can use it to reach a new audience. The real time aspect might provide us with a goldmine of last minute crew or a channel for broadcasting late changes or updates. I will do something to promote the channel in the coming. In the mean time follow us if you are already on Twitter. Join up if you are not. More info on http://twitter.com/fleet27.

Spars from New Zealand

10/30/2009 01:11:00 PM, Posted by Test, No Comment

With North Americans coming in May next year Eric Sanderson in Seattle is working on importing some J/24 masts, booms and carbon fiber spinnaker poles from Sparloft in New Zealand. Sparloft supplies J/24 spars around world and enjoy an excellent reputation.

Eric will be able to land them on the west coast, either Seattle or Vancouver, BC, for a decent discount from what can be obtained domestically from the East Coast.

The last shipment came in about $3500 for a mast only. Mast and boom about $4250. Right now he might be able to share a container directly to Seattle which would be the most efficient in terms of time and money.

On offer are masts, booms and spinnaker poles (both double taper aluminum and straight tube carbon).

Email Eric for more information or captain@fleet27.com if you do not have his contact details.

Soup at the Nationals

9/30/2009 07:58:00 AM, Posted by Test, No Comment

The following report in from Doug at the J24 Nationals in San Francisco:

Despite the amount of travel/logistics, Nationals was a great time – great to hit the road at least once per year, always a good time. Fleet 17 and San Francisco Yacht Club put on a great regatta, with 9 races over 3 days. 3 boats down from Seattle, 2 from Annapolis, a couple from down South, and then the local gang made for a solid, tough, but relatively small fleet of 20 boats compared to previous National events. Most of the boats did the Western Regionals the weekend prior, and it showed as it took us awhile to get the Soup rolling well – not adjusting well for tides (it goes both ways!) we tagged a couple marks on first day. On the 2nd day our starts hurt us, and we didn’t have the boat going as well in the big breeze. Come Sunday we had it figured out a bit better by going up on the rig early, and really letting the Genoa breath more. With a couple good starts, were “hanging” with some of the top boats most of the way around the course, but a mistake here/there and you’re back to 9th again with the caliber of the fleet. Overall we wound up 13th, one point out of 12th, 2 points out of 11th. Some more pics/etc. if interested at www.soupsailing.blogspot.com.

Congratulations to the Soup crew on a good result and for flying the flag for Fleet 27 on the national stage.

Post Summer Short Course Racing

8/21/2009 09:10:00 AM, Posted by Test, No Comment

From Ray McCormack
McCormack Consulting

Just wanted to make sure I get everyone enough time to put in their calendar and give crews notice on Post Summer Short Course Racing. This is the third year I have done this, and I enjoy serving the Portland sailing community some fun.

No NOR will be developed this year, this will be run as just a fun, low key event. Muliple races of windward/leeward will be run from my Avon at 6 PM each night, with possibly my kids blowing bubbles down the race course. Boats who want to participate and be recognized as scored need to sail by on starboard tack hailing their sail number, and providing beverages if they wish. No protests will be honored, so folks need to settle situations on their own. OCS's will be recorded this year because of the recognition of scoring.

Dates: September 3, 10, & 17th. 6 PM start.

Each night after racing we can meet at the deck for beers and burgers. I will see what we can do to come up with some fun prizes for the last night. Last year we had a few San Juans and the J-24's make it out. Please forward this message on to others if they wish to participate. Even PHRF keel boats or dinghies can come out if they wish. Everyone starts at the same time though, and from there I will break up "classes".

Hopefully CYC will let me borrow some of there gear again.

Spud Cup Idaho Labor Day Weekend

7/30/2009 09:14:00 AM, Posted by Test, No Comment

Information about the Spud Cup race in Sandpoint has been finalized and posted to the Sandpoint Sailing Association web site: http://www.sandpointsailing.com/

The basics are:

Registration: $65 per boat, 5:30 PM to 8:00 PM Friday night (Sept. 4th) Late Registration $75 Saturday morning 7:00 - 8:00

Food & Drink: $25 per person meal ticket gets you two continental breakfasts Sat. & Sun. morning, dinner Saturday night, and a portion of a keg of beer each night (Friday & Saturday). Additional donations for the beer are encouraged. There may (or may not) be a lunch break ashore on Sat. & Sun.

Racing: Skippers Meeting Sat. 8:30 AM, first flag 9:30 AM, no starts after 4:00 PM

Skippers Meeting: Sun. 8:30 AM, first flag 9:30 AM, no starts after 3:00 PM

J24s will race one-design, probably first start with a longer windward-leeward course than the fleet handicap folks

Accommodations: There will NOT be a crane available for lifting boats. If there were only one boat that needed to be lifted, it would be possible for that boat to switch to my ramp-launch trailer at my house. Per the race instructions, contact Chris Chambers for moorage at the Seasons dock (Seasons is an upscale private dock adjacent to the City of Sandpoint’s Windbag Marina. I think they allowed Spud Cup use for no charge last year.) I still have two bedrooms with queen beds and a third room with lots of sleeping bag space at my house, 10 miles south of Sandpoint. There are several motels available in Sandpoint with the Edgewater being closest to the Marina.

Additional Questions? Please see the web site. http://www.sandpointsailing.com/

Sandpoint Sailing Association located on Lake Pend Oreille in Sandpoint, Idaho will be hosting the Spud Cup Races Labor Day. Lots (10+) J24s already signed up. They will attempt a minimum of 3 races on Saturday and 2 races on Sunday.

How about we send some Portland boats!?!?

Location

Sadnpoint Idaho. (map). Google tells me that it is 424 miles away (7 hours).

The crew can take the train! Leave Portland at 4:45PM Friday and get to Sandpoint 2AM (urgh) but the return trip is a little ugly with a 11:30PM departure. But it would be a workable and fun outbound journey if the crew want to catch up with the boat. $56. More information at Amtrack.

District Championship Race at Cascade Locks 1-2 August

7/16/2009 07:25:00 AM, Posted by Test, No Comment

Fleet 27, in partnership with the Columbia Gorge Racing Association will be hosting the District 19 Championship in Cascade Locks on 1-2 of August 2009.

We did not raise a fleet for this event - J24s will not have an individual start nd this is no longer the district championship race.

The race will be held in the Columbia Gorge Cascade Locks.

Get Involved!

the logistics are keeping some of you from attending. But with teamwork we can make this simple. There are a number of ways to get involved.
  1. Take the boat up there - travel up sail with your regular crew. Cloud 9, Free Bowl, Snot Hog are doing this. Requires that you deliver Friday and Monday though.
  2. Deliver a boat up or back- the delivery is a highlight. Volenteer to take up a boat to and enable greater attendance. Drop me a note if you want your boat delivered or can take a boat.
  3. Crew on a boat - Crew on another boat. Its a spectacular and windy venue. Drop me a line if interested.

Notice of Race

Notice of Race is available here.

Travel by Water from Portland

This is one of the highlights of the weekend. See photos of last year's trip for reasons why.

Depart Thursday after racing or Friday moning. We intend to depart from Portland at 6:15AM and from Government Island dock by 7:30AM. We intend to make the 3:30PM locks and to be on the Cascade Docks by 5:00PM. On the return trip we will leave after the last race and camp and Beacon Rock Sunday night. We expect to be in Portland by 3:00PM Monday.

Locations

See map for locations.

Schedule of Events

If time allows there will be a practice race Friday at about 6:30PM. After that we suggest docking in Stevenshon for a great Mexican Dinner.

Racing is as per NOR Saturday and Sunday.

SUPPLEMENTAL RACE INSTRUCTIONS

Oregon Food Bank Event this Friday

7/08/2009 01:27:00 AM, Posted by Test, No Comment

Apologies (somewhat) if I’m over-communicating, but hope to see people out this Friday for the Oregon Food Bank event. Some fun/cool changes this year that should make it great for your sponsors (and family/friends) to join you at the shore party, and up your tally… J Top donating J24 gets an autographed book about J-boats signed by Rod Johnston himself!

-Doug

Race Event: Friday July 10th, 2009. First (only) starting signal at 6:30pm. Look for the J24 “Free Bowl of Soup” flying a big red J-Flag as the committee boat near the tip of Tomahawk Island. See the OCSA race book for additional details, and course. Contact Doug at (503) 645-8398 or dougschenk3837@hotmail.com if questions.

Scoring: Each yacht’s finishing order will be determined by the amount of $ and/or food items donated (each $1 counts for 5 cans of food). $/food can be dropped off to the Soup on the water, or better yet at the Social Event. “Scoring” will continue until ~9:30-10pm at the social event. This is a low-key race, no protests or collisions allowed!

Trophies: The top 5 scoring yachts shall trophy (thanks to Chuck’s Trophies!), with the highest scoring yacht being declared the 6th annual Oregon Food Bank Free Bowl of Soup Night winner, with appropriate prize packages and accolades bestowed up on them.

Social Event: Should be more fun than ever thanks to Columbia Crossings, as a “pre-kickoff” to their summer concert series. Food from Norma’s Kitchen and refreshments from Bridgeport Brewing and Crater Lake Soda to be available for purchase with a portion of the proceeds going to Oregon Food Bank. Racers, family, friends, and kids will enjoy a fun mix of live music from Sounds Like Chicken. Open to anyone/everyone sailing or not, RSVPs appreciated for planning, but not required. Working out the math, but the more people and $ spent from your boat, the better chance of placing! May auction some donated items, but most likely they will go to the top donations. Gates open at 6:00pm, racers should show about 8:00pm (target for band to start), no outside food/beverages, overnight guest moorage can be arranged.

Note from Doug after the Event:
Wanted to thank all the J24 folks that made it out Friday night for the Oregon Food Bank Free Bowl of Soup Night! Putting the official count at 33 boats (a good percentage of the J24s), with a great collection of J24s. Formal race report forthcoming, but wanted to congratulate Ken Roush and Straight shot picking up 5th place (Ken – have a box of goods including the trophy for you, we’ll have to figure out a time for a handoff) and to the Home Skool’d White Trash gang for coming in 1st place for their 3rd time (I believe). Also thanks again to Columbia Crossings for support, and the amazing on-shore setup (leveraged from their summer concert series).

Sean Trew (PacificFog.net) managed to make it down, will forward on the link to his pics when they are available.

So, who’s in for Goldrush on the 25th, not to mention the Gorge/Districts the weekend after? Soup is planning to head up by river again this year, but the CGRA guys are curious when/how the hoist will be needed.

UK Sailing Races - Cowes Week and Round the Island

5/29/2009 08:49:00 AM, Posted by Test, No Comment

I used to sail in Cowes Week and the Round the Island Race.

Round the Island is a single day event which draws 1875 boats. Don't expect to win unless your boat looks like this.

Cowes Week is a week long mega-regatta which attracts 1000 boats and 9000 competitors. Cowes takes place in August in a spectacular setting on the south coast. It brings together an amazing variety of boats.

I suggest that one year we put together a Fleet 27 J24 race team and that we head over there. I have no details planned and no boat sourced but I want to launch the idea. How about 2012?

Race Summary

5/01/2009 03:07:00 PM, Posted by Test, No Comment

The Race Committee gave it a gallant try last night. An east wind against a 2-4 knot current are not the ingredients for a successful evening of racing. The committee waited until the wind was more or less steady at 10 knots or more before making a decision to race. When puffs in excess of 12 knots started to fill things around Buoy 14, the “go” decision was made.

Tony and his crew of A Fleet volunteers wisely added C as a mark of the course just in case the J 24 race had to be shortened from 2 laps to 1. And the Poncho crew was ready to finish the other fleets at B if necessary.

The RC was able to shorten the J24 course and finish a race for the fleet. For the other fleets, no such luck. While a few of the Cruising Fleet boats could have finished in time, there just wasn’t enough light left in the day to finish all boats in any other fleet. As a result, the RC had to abandon the race for everyone else. Bummer.

On the bright side, wind direction notwithstanding, it was a nice night for sailing on the Columbia River. And there was no sign of pirates, porcine ailments, or toxic assets anywhere to be seen.

No races next week because of the Offshore. SYSCO Spring Series racing resumes on the 12th and 14th.

If you’re doing the Offshore, break a leg. If you’re not, remember practice doesn’t make perfect, perfect practice does.

See you on the water,

Rich

Fleet Dues are Due

3/30/2009 10:51:00 PM, Posted by Test, No Comment

I’ll bring those who missed the fleet meeting at Hopworks on March 8th (which was most everyone…) up to speed regarding our fleets finances.

1. Our 2008 Ending Balance was $974.00.
2. It was decided by those in attendance to keep the dues at $30.00 for 2009

You can either a)mail me a check or b)hunt me down before/after a race.

If option a) works best for you my address is:

Make the check out to me, Tim Hansen.

As a reminder, both current International J24 Class Association and Fleet 27 membership are required for consideration for fleet trophies and social functions.

Good Sailing,

Minutes of the Spring Meeting

3/12/2009 04:17:00 PM, Posted by Test, No Comment

  1. Welcome new members and boats - Welcome to Steve who will be joining us this year on Kamikaze. And to Phil Brzytwa who will be binging his boat to the river this season. Both are experienced sailors who say they look forward to meeting the other boats and testing out the local waters. Good luck to them and to anyone else new to this mailing list or club.
  2. Treasurer report - We have approximately 900 USD in the bank. We agreed to hold the fees at 30 per boat per year. That income should cover costs and will give us a float if we decide to fund any activity when we host the regionals this year (see below).
  3. Elect officers - Tim agreed to stay on as treasurer. Eric agreed to accept a unanimous nomination and is now co-captain with me. He and I want to hear from you if you have gripes, ideas, problems of information. We assume that priorities are (1) quality racing (2) maintain or increase participation (3) fun on and off the river and we will work to deliver the above. But if these are wrong or if there are more then email me. Mike fro 8-Ball agreed to be fleet race officer for the 2 events that we will host.
  4. Awards and Cups - Phil (BiteMe) won the Weeknight Series Championship in 2007 but was never awarded a cup as none was available. We now have the cup but this time Phil was not available. A 3rd ceremony will be arranged at a time convenient to both at which point the 2 will be united. After that small distraction Doug and Eric stepped forward to collect the rest of the silverware having won (1) the Weeknight Series in 2008 (cup only now awarded), (2) the Fish Outta Water trophy for best performance in foreign waters (including a very respectable 4th at CGOD), and (3) the Fleet Championship following a consistently good collection of results in the races that mattered. Congratulations to the Soup crew and well done to the the others who spent time at the front this season. There was talk of 2 other awards though they were not made. These were 'most improved' which should go to Rain Cloud and 'shaking out the kinks' which goes to Star Eyed Stella who's crew put in a great performance locally. Special thanks to Blaine and all the race management crews who ran a very smart series this last summer.
  5. Pick races for the fleet championship - The will score the Thursday night regattas (SYSCO Spring Series, SYSCO Summer Series, and SYSCO/Columbia Crossing One Design) and the every OCSA targeted event . OCSA are as follows:
    • Opening Day
    • SYSCO Spring
    • PYC Rose Festival
    • RCYC Summer
    • PYC and SHSC Gold Rush
    • CYC Summer Series
    • PYC Fall
    • RCYC Long Distance
    • CYC Fall
  6. Discuss additional targeted regattas - It was agreed that Portland will host the District Championship this year. Races will be held as part of the CGOD event at cascade locks. It is a long weekend in Canada and the Gorge has an attractive reputation so we hope to get good participation from around the regions. And we certainly expect to get good participation from the fleet. The weekend is a highlight in the season and the venue delivers spectacular racing. See http://tinyurl.com/cascadelocks for my pictures of the trip up and back last year. Camping is available. So block out the weekend of 1 and 2 August and make the trip up with us.
  7. Discuss new rules - There was a meeting last night at PYC to introduce the new rules. Those that were there (I was not sadly) will know more than the rest of us. I will see if I can find and send a summary. WE WILL BE SAILING TO THE NEW RULES THIS SEASON - IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO KNOW THEM BEFORE YOU HIT THE WATER. more at www.ussailing.org/rules.
  8. Any other business - Robin suggested that we pick a person to 'promote' a specific race. This is a good idea and we will test that out this season. We also remind members to register and support the Class. J24 is a better boat because it has strong class participation and numbers in the districts/fleets carry weight when it comes to decisions, berths, landing big events. We decided last year that class membership was required if you are to compete for the Fleet trophy. Join or renew at www.j24class.org/usa
  9. News from the region - Doug brings us the following news summary hot from the J24 regional newswire....

Some big events down in San Francisco this year:
  • 2009 TMC District 20 Championship - August 8th and 9th (practice race on Friday Night included) Hosted by TMC and located at Berkeley Yacht Club on San Francisco Bay
  • 2009 Western Regional Championship - September 19th and 20th ((practice race on Friday Night included) Hosted by and located at Berkeley Yacht Club on San Francisco Bay
  • 2009 National Championship - September 23rd through the 27th (racing on the 25th through the 27th) Hosted by and located at San Francisco Yacht Club (Tiburon). More information on the national 2009 calendar can be found at http://www.j24class.org/usa/calendar/index.htm
  • 2010 North American's are going to be hosted by Seattle! Current thought (not locked) is the weekend between NOOD and Swiftsure in May. Use NOOD as a feeder, and possibly make it the J24 Western Regionals - which are in our District this year as well.
On the class front:

The USJCA is working on an updated set of qualification regatta standards that need to be met when an event leads to a World's qualification berth.

  • Districts - Certificates and weigh crew
  • Western Regionals - Certificates and weigh crew
  • Nationals - Certificates, weigh crew, measure sails, weigh boat for all-up 1354 Kilos weight and post-race spot checks
  • North Americans - Certificates, weigh crew, measure sails, weigh boat for all-up 1354 Kilos weight and post-race spot checks
  • Worlds - measure everything, etc.

More information on the rules and measurement can be found at http://www.j24class.org/usa/rules/index.htm

Also covered:
  • The IJCA has approved Kevlar genoas for the J/24 Class. Target is for this to go live in time for the Worlds in Annapolis in May.
  • J/24 Class advertising rules have been brought in-line with the ISAF rules
  • The new interior design has been approved.
  • The Italians are working on getting a new mold licensed/approved by the "Builder of Record"/J-Boats.
These and other stories covered in the J24 forum at http://www.j24class.org/IJCAForums/tabid/72/Default.aspx

The Portland, Oregon J-24 Fleet is one of the most competitive one-design fleets in Portland, with some of the hottest racing on the Columbia River. With over 20 boats in town, up to 15 boats on the line in our Thursday night series, and the Columbia River Gorge in our backyard, it’s tough to beat. The J24 is one of the most popular keelboats in the world with more than 50,000 people sailing over 5200 boats in 150 fleets in 40 countries. Competitive used boats are available and affordable. Traveling with the J-24 is a realistic and fun option with some popular/recent destinations being the Columbia Gorge (one of the best sailing venues in the country), Seattle, Idaho, Montana, and British Columbia.

With 30 boats on the line in Seattle, and strong fleets throughout District 19, as well as the US/World, the J24 offers the ability to compete and learn against some of the best sailors around, and/or just enjoy a competitive Thursday night on the river.

In addition to weeknight and weekend racing, the fleet also has social events throughout the year. New faces are always welcome as crew or new owners. If you are interested in getting involved in a great sailing group, contact John Weil for information about the fleet!
