Cascade Locks Marine Park, Cascade Locks, Oregon
The purpose of this event is to showcase a new format for Youth Sailing in a fun, unorthodox, and loosely competitive style. This format has already proven popular at many O’Pen Bic regattas around the world. Results are not nearly as important as everyone having a good time sailing. Don’t expect conventional round the buoys racing or normal 1-2-3 prizes. Capsizes and freestyle and fun will be required. If you are a hard-core racer with rule book in hand, this event may not be for you. If you want to just have fun and pioneer a new chapter in Youth Sailing, game on!

2009 J/24 District 19 Championship Portland Leg - Results and T-Shirts
Congratulation to Kent Sisk and the gang on No Worries on the District Championship. Some amazing conditions for the river had the blades up all weekend, a total of 7 races, and great racing that came down to the final race to finalize the results. 2nd was Deadbeat, and 3rd was BiteMe.

2009 J/24 District 19 Championship - Sailing Instructions
The sailing instructions for the race are now available. Fleet get-together & weigh-in Friday at SideBar and/or 5th Quadrant. 6-9pm. Also plan for weigh-in tomorrow AM at Tomahawk marina (before race departure) and McCuddys (13:00-13:20). We will be using this crew weight form.

Post Summer Short Course Racing

Just wanted to make sure I get everyone enough time to put in their calendar and give crews notice on Post Summer Short Course Racing. This is the third year I have done this, and I enjoy serving the Portland sailing community some fun.
No NOR will be developed this year, this will be run as just a fun, low key event. Muliple races of windward/leeward will be run from my Avon at 6 PM each night, with possibly my kids blowing bubbles down the race course. Boats who want to participate and be recognized as scored need to sail by on starboard tack hailing their sail number, and providing beverages if they wish. No protests will be honored, so folks need to settle situations on their own. OCS's will be recorded this year because of the recognition of scoring.
Dates: September 3, 10, & 17th. 6 PM start.
Each night after racing we can meet at the deck for beers and burgers. I will see what we can do to come up with some fun prizes for the last night. Last year we had a few San Juans and the J-24's make it out. Please forward this message on to others if they wish to participate. Even PHRF keel boats or dinghies can come out if they wish. Everyone starts at the same time though, and from there I will break up "classes".
Hopefully CYC will let me borrow some of there gear again.

Spud Cup Idaho Labor Day Weekend
Information about the Spud Cup race in Sandpoint has been finalized and posted to the Sandpoint Sailing Association web site: http://www.sandpointsailing.com/
The basics are:
Registration: $65 per boat, 5:30 PM to 8:00 PM Friday night (Sept. 4th) Late Registration $75 Saturday morning 7:00 - 8:00
Food & Drink: $25 per person meal ticket gets you two continental breakfasts Sat. & Sun. morning, dinner Saturday night, and a portion of a keg of beer each night (Friday & Saturday). Additional donations for the beer are encouraged. There may (or may not) be a lunch break ashore on Sat. & Sun.
Racing: Skippers Meeting Sat. 8:30 AM, first flag 9:30 AM, no starts after 4:00 PM
Skippers Meeting: Sun. 8:30 AM, first flag 9:30 AM, no starts after 3:00 PM
J24s will race one-design, probably first start with a longer windward-leeward course than the fleet handicap folks
Accommodations: There will NOT be a crane available for lifting boats. If there were only one boat that needed to be lifted, it would be possible for that boat to switch to my ramp-launch trailer at my house. Per the race instructions, contact Chris Chambers for moorage at the Seasons dock (Seasons is an upscale private dock adjacent to the City of Sandpoint’s Windbag Marina. I think they allowed Spud Cup use for no charge last year.) I still have two bedrooms with queen beds and a third room with lots of sleeping bag space at my house, 10 miles south of Sandpoint. There are several motels available in Sandpoint with the Edgewater being closest to the Marina.

Sandpoint Sailing Association located on Lake Pend Oreille in Sandpoint, Idaho will be hosting the Spud Cup Races Labor Day. Lots (10+) J24s already signed up. They will attempt a minimum of 3 races on Saturday and 2 races on Sunday.

Sadnpoint Idaho. (map). Google tells me that it is 424 miles away (7 hours).
The crew can take the train! Leave Portland at 4:45PM Friday and get to Sandpoint 2AM (urgh) but the return trip is a little ugly with a 11:30PM departure. But it would be a workable and fun outbound journey if the crew want to catch up with the boat. $56. More information at Amtrack.

We will attempt a minimum of 3 races on Saturday and 2 races on Sunday. No starts after 3:00 p.m. on Sunday. If 5 or more races are completed, 1 throw out will be awarded.
Scoring will be in accordance with the Low Point system. One race will constitute a regatta. In the event that a minimum of 5 races is held, 1 throw out will be allowed.
Spud Cup awarded to Best Overall Performance.
Social
There will be food and bottomless beers on Saturday night and a breakfast on Sunday morning. Both for a modest cost.
Accommodation
A few of the local sailors have offered accommodation at their homes. Bruce has free camping in his garden. Hotel Edgewater/Best Western is standing by on 208-263-3194 Ask for Renee Reuter or email edgwater@netw.com. For the hotel you'd better Book Ahead!! This is the best spot to stay...
Facilities
For lifting crane availability and cost, please contact Rob Berube (see notice of race). Two launch ramps are located at Sandpoint’s City Beach. Boats may be docked at the Windbag Marina at the discretion of the harbor master. Moorage may be available at the Seasons to the north of the Windbag, please contact Chris Chambers (see notice of race).

District Championship Race at Cascade Locks 1-2 August
Fleet 27, in partnership with the Columbia Gorge Racing Association will be hosting the District 19 Championship in Cascade Locks on 1-2 of August 2009.
We did not raise a fleet for this event - J24s will not have an individual start nd this is no longer the district championship race.
The race will be held in the Columbia Gorge Cascade Locks.

We intend to make the 3:30PM locks and to be on the Cascade Docks by 5:00PM. On the return trip we will leave after the last race and camp and Beacon Rock Sunday night. We expect to be in Portland by 3:00PM Monday.

- Take the boat up there - travel up sail with your regular crew. Cloud 9, Free Bowl, Snot Hog are doing this. Requires that you deliver Friday and Monday though.
- Deliver a boat up or back- the delivery is a highlight. Volenteer to take up a boat to and enable greater attendance. Drop me a note if you want your boat delivered or can take a boat.
- Crew on a boat - Crew on another boat. Its a spectacular and windy venue. Drop me a line if interested.

The race instructions are supplemented to provide that a minimum of three (3) boats of the same design will constitute a fleet. We have 3 Cal 20's, 1 Merit 25 and 1 Ranger 20 registered so far
Oregon Food Bank Event this Friday
Apologies (somewhat) if I’m over-communicating, but hope to see people out this Friday for the Oregon Food Bank event. Some fun/cool changes this year that should make it great for your sponsors (and family/friends) to join you at the shore party, and up your tally… J Top donating J24 gets an autographed book about J-boats signed by Rod Johnston himself!

Race Event: Friday July 10th, 2009. First (only) starting signal at 6:30pm. Look for the J24 “Free Bowl of Soup” flying a big red J-Flag as the committee boat near the tip of Tomahawk Island. See the OCSA race book for additional details, and course. Contact Doug at (503) 645-8398 or dougschenk3837@hotmail.com if questions.
Scoring: Each yacht’s finishing order will be determined by the amount of $ and/or food items donated (each $1 counts for 5 cans of food). $/food can be dropped off to the Soup on the water, or better yet at the Social Event. “Scoring” will continue until ~9:30-10pm at the social event. This is a low-key race, no protests or collisions allowed!
Trophies: The top 5 scoring yachts shall trophy (thanks to Chuck’s Trophies!), with the highest scoring yacht being declared the 6th annual Oregon Food Bank Free Bowl of Soup Night winner, with appropriate prize packages and accolades bestowed up on them.
Social Event: Should be more fun than ever thanks to Columbia Crossings, as a “pre-kickoff” to their summer concert series. Food from Norma’s Kitchen and refreshments from Bridgeport Brewing and Crater Lake Soda to be available for purchase with a portion of the proceeds going to Oregon Food Bank. Racers, family, friends, and kids will enjoy a fun mix of live music from Sounds Like Chicken. Open to anyone/everyone sailing or not, RSVPs appreciated for planning, but not required. Working out the math, but the more people and $ spent from your boat, the better chance of placing! May auction some donated items, but most likely they will go to the top donations. Gates open at 6:00pm, racers should show about 8:00pm (target for band to start), no outside food/beverages, overnight guest moorage can be arranged.

Wanted to thank all the J24 folks that made it out Friday night for the Oregon Food Bank Free Bowl of Soup Night! Putting the official count at 33 boats (a good percentage of the J24s), with a great collection of J24s. Formal race report forthcoming, but wanted to congratulate Ken Roush and Straight shot picking up 5th place (Ken – have a box of goods including the trophy for you, we’ll have to figure out a time for a handoff) and to the Home Skool’d White Trash gang for coming in 1st place for their 3rd time (I believe). Also thanks again to Columbia Crossings for support, and the amazing on-shore setup (leveraged from their summer concert series).

So, who’s in for Goldrush on the 25th, not to mention the Gorge/Districts the weekend after? Soup is planning to head up by river again this year, but the CGRA guys are curious when/how the hoist will be needed.

Attached are the Class Breaks and Sailing Instructions for this weekend's
event. Racing is scheduled for 1830 on Friday 19 June 2009 and 1200 on
Saturday 20 June 2009. A social following racing on Saturday will be held
at the RCYC Clubhouse and trophies will be presented for the RCYC Medium
Distance Race and the Summer Regatta. All fleets, with the exception of the
Sea Scouts, should expect MULTIPLE RACES on both days.
Please PRINT A COPY OF THE ATTACHMENTS AND BRING THEM WITH YOU TO THE RACE;
additional hand-outs may or may not be available from the Race Committee.
