Bic O'Pen Un-Regatta for Kids

8/24/2010 11:20:00 PM, Posted by Test, 3 Comments

Saturday, August 28, 2010
Cascade Locks Marine Park, Cascade Locks, Oregon

The purpose of this event is to showcase a new format for Youth Sailing in a fun, unorthodox, and loosely competitive style. This format has already proven popular at many O’Pen Bic regattas around the world. Results are not nearly as important as everyone having a good time sailing. Don’t expect conventional round the buoys racing or normal 1-2-3 prizes. Capsizes and freestyle and fun will be required. If you are a hard-core racer with rule book in hand, this event may not be for you. If you want to just have fun and pioneer a new chapter in Youth Sailing, game on!

For more information on this race see the comment on this post.

8/05/2010 01:17:00 PM, Posted by Test, No Comment

From Phil:

Hey Fleet 27,

I am suggesting us meet up at the NE version of Old Town Pizza after tonight's races:

5201 NE Martin Luther King Jr Blvd
Portland,OR 97211
Neighborhood: Northeast Portland
(503) 200-5988
Also, on Tuesday eve motoring out of Tomahawk Bay we and three others ran a ground on a sand bar just north of the entrance.  That was at low water and tonight's low is at  8pm or so.  We found a deeper channel just down stream after exiting the entrance.  Phil

Pete Sauer and the Bound for Glory gang are the J24 District 19 Champions!

7/30/2010 08:07:00 PM, Posted by Test, No Comment

This past weekend the J24 District 19 Championship was held by J24 Fleet 174 in Sandpoint, ID.  14 boats competed, with 7 traveling in from Montana, Seattle, and Portland.  8 races were held over 2 days, with postponements on shore leading to some nice breeze by the end of the day.  Great job by the all the folks involved in Sandpoint to put on a great event, and for the teams that came to participate.

Additional info and results at http://web.sandpointsailing.com/j24/districtsRecap.html

Will work to post some additional pictures and videos over the next week.

This was also stop #3 on the PNW Championship circuit (following NAs, and Waves), with the 4th and final regatta starting this weekend as part of the Montana Cup at Flathead Lake Montana.

If you plan on racing in the SYSCO/Columbia Crossings Regatta on 8/14, please register early.  The usual suspect at SYSCO Race Central will be away, so all the work will fall on the shoulders of a woefully under-paid but very cheerful temp. staff at SRC.

Some early birds have already responded to the call…Thank You!

In order for races to count for points, there must be 3 or more qualified boats in an OD, Level, and/or PHRF Fleet as well as the A1 and/or A2 Class and Cruising F and/or Cruising S Class.

Aloha,

The Usual Suspect @ SYSCO Race Central

Boat for sale - #2370

3/09/2010 01:03:00 PM, Posted by Test, No Comment

Note from David Biggar

Howdy Fleet 27,
With the season and Nationals around the corner, Just a reminder that #2370 is available, and I would like to get it to a good home(preferably back in Portland, "build the fleet!").  It does need some deck work, but below the waterline is fantastic, comes with loads of new running rigging, new rudder, new carbon spin pole, new Nissan 3.5HP,  Triad Tandem trailer...."new" style hatches, etc.   I have tons of pics and info for anyone who might be interested, please send an email.
Would be a great boat for someone who would like to choose the hardware layout and deck color, and wants a great package deal with a lot of bells and whistles for a very fair price.
Reasonable offers will be considered.  One of those situations where with a little bit of TLC and efforts, someone is gonna have a diamond again.
I hope all of you are doing very well, and I do miss the fleet in Portland.  : )

Launching from Local Boat Ramps

3/08/2010 09:51:00 AM, Posted by Test, No Comment

The following advice was offered by members on launching from local ramps.

Port of Camas

I launched from Port of Camas Washougal last year without incident. There is a good dock on the downstream side, the gradient is fair, and the current is not strong. BUT make sure that it is not a busy time. There can be lots of Dory boats. - Rob N

Vancouver Marine Park

I've launched boats at the Vancouver Marine Park boat ramp.
Should work fine this time of year.
On a J/24, probably need to use a rope attached to the trailer / tow vehicle to get the boat far enough into the water to float off the trailer, without drowning your vehicle.
Back trailer down to waterline, chock trailer wheels, attach strong rope to trailer and vehicle, disconnect from vehicle, take up tension and remove chocks, back trailer into water.
On single axle trailer, make sure boat is balanced so it will not tip backwards when disconnected from tow vehicle on the ramp incline.
Use the downriver dock, and the current will hold the boat to the dock. - Stephen E

How Not To Launch a J24

And lastly an example of how NOT to do it!
